(II) SIR CREEK Out of all other reciprocal debates among Pakistan and India, the Sir Creek Dispute can be relied upon to have a moderately speedy arrangement. The settlement of this contest can be utilized as a significant Confidence-Building Measure to expand on to determine other pending questions. Sir Creek is a 96 km portion of water. It is comprised of swamps which makes it water-logged for the greater part of the year. It runs in the Ran of Ketch area. The Ran of Ketch zone lies between the south of Kinds in Pakistan and the State of Gujarat in India. Chronicled proof (explicitly the 1908 Imperial Gazetteer of India) plainly demonstrates that during the British Rule in India, the Ran of Ketch was a piece of Kinds. Afterward, when India was divided in 1947, Kinds turned into a piece of Pakistan (along these lines Sir Creek additionally turned into a piece of Pakistan). As per Paragraphs 9 and 10 of the ‘1914 Bombay Resolution' (which was marked adolescent the Government of Bombay and the Ruler of Ketch), the ‘Green Line' as showed in the guide plainly divided the limits of Sir Creek and remembered the entire of it for Kinds.India then contended that from the specialized angle, the ‘Green Line' isn't a limit yet Just a ‘indication of a limit. India asserted that the limit of Sir Creek lies abuse into the water and that precise ly 50% of Sir Creek is a piece of India. To approve this case, India underwrites the ‘Thales Principle'. In 1965, Indian powers unjustifiably endeavored to hold onto Sir Creek since India needed to build up its maritime base n the Gulf of Ketch. Subsequently, India picked up control off piece of Sir Creek. At the point when the possibility of significant mineral assets (oil/gas) was found in the subsurface of Sir Creek, Pakistan and India turned out to be progressively genuine about their individual claims. Both nations presently understand that on the off chance that they free one kilometer of Sir Creek on ground, it would along these lines mean lost several square nautical miles of the ingenious financial zone submerged. Indian's ebb and flow position is that limits should initially be set apart submerged and as per the submerged limits, the land limits will be delineated. Pakistanis flow position is to initially outline on the ground and afterward submerged. Pakistan needs t he selection of the 1914 Bombay Resolution. Pakistan was eager to welcome universal intervention since it trusts it has a solid case. Be that as it may, India constantly needed to keep this issue bilateral.Proposed Solution-1914 Bombay Resolution: (an) Indian's underwriting of ‘Thales Principle' isn't relevant on account of Sir Creek since Sir Creek is Water-logged and not safe' for most piece of the year. The Thales Principle holds appropriate just for traversable territories. (b) The outline of land limits will be done first. The outline of the submerged oceanic limits will at that point follow. (c) Indian's outlandish contention that boundary will initially be done submerged should be countered. Hydrosphere from both Pakistan and India have pronounced that ecological changes have happened throughout the years and it is preposterous any longer to recognize regional waters without differentiating the land territory first. D) During the procedure of division, the ‘1991 P akistan-India Agreement on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Maneuvers and Troop Movement' will be carefully trailed by the two sides to guarantee harmony along the coastline of Sir Creek. E) After differentiating Sir Creek, the two nations will present their individual limit cutoff points to the ‘Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLC). The CLC will consider and assess the information put together by every nation. (f) Here, Pakistan will naturally have a more grounded case on the grounds that as indicated by the standards of CLC, India can not specify Sir Creek as a piece of its mainland rack in the reports which it will submit to CLC. (g) 3 variables will additionally reinforce Pakistanis case. To begin with, Sir Creek was a significant water wholesalers of River Indus and Pakistan has an undisputed directly over River Indus.Second, the ‘Green Line' appeared in the maps of 1914 Bombay Resolution obviously gets Sir Creek Pakistanis regional space. Th ird, the tail of Sir Creek ends in Baden which is a locale in Pakistan. (h) Pakistanis claims are extremely solid and all things considered, the CLC will in the long run favor Pakistan. As per the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLES), the two nations are will undoubtedly resolve this contest on the grounds that except if this question is settled, neither one of the sides will be qualified to abuse their individual Exclusive Economic Zones in the ocean. (Sick) PRISONERS The settlement of Sir Creek Dispute can be followed with another significant Confidence-Building Measure. The region of Sir Creek is concentrated with fishermen.Since regional outskirts in water (and ashore) are not appropriately stamped, anglers from the two sides end up erroneously intruding into one another's regional waters. They are then captured. The laws which are utilized by Pakistan and India to administer their oceans and capture these anglers have not been adjusted by UNCLES. Pakistani a nglers are captured by India under the ‘Maritime Zones of India Acts, 1976 and 1981'. India is a signatory of he UNCLES however its sea zone acts don't comply with the United Nations Convention on Law of the Seas (UNCLES). The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (AMPS) and t

This can be particularly difficult to manage if you also have symptoms of depression or anxiety. When you feel like youre stress levels have reached their peak, it might be time to take a quick break to reset. Sometimes taking a mental health dayâ€"a day off thats specifically geared toward stress relief and burnout preventionâ€"is the best thing you can do for yourself. While one day might not solve heavy underlying problems that lead to burnout, a mental health day can provide a much-needed break to pause, regroup, and come back with greater levels of energy and a fresh, less-stressed perspective. Unfortunately, employers are not always supportive of psychological issues that workers may face. Yet mental health issues take a serious economic toll worldwide.?? According to research conducted by the World Health Organization, anxiety and depressive disorders cost more than a trillion dollars globally in lost productivity each year. Whatever stressors you face, these tips can help you take a mental health day and make the most of it. Take a  Day Once you have decided to take a mental health day, the question then becomes when and how. Ideally, if you can schedule a day off ahead of time, ensuring that youve taken steps to rearrange your workload or find a replacement for the day, this is the best way to do it, so youre not feeling stress about taking the day off. However, if you wake up in the morning and just feel that you cant face the stress of the day, this may be a good time to take a mental health day and make the most of it. While there has been a growing movement to destigmatize mental health issues in the workplace, many employers still believe that mental health concerns are not legitimate reasons to miss a day of work. A survey commissioned by the British government found that 70% of employers did not believe that stress, anxiety, and depression were valid reasons for missing work.?? More than half of employees felt that their employer did not take mental health issues seriously. For that reason, many workers report faking illness in order to get time off to cope. The decision of when to take a mental health day really depends on your personal situation. If your employer is supportive and you are comfortable sharing your reasons, feel free to plan a mental health day out in advance. If you dont want to divulge your reasons for taking a day or if your employer is less understanding, dont feel obligated to share. You can: Plan to use some of your time offSchedule your mental health day for a day you already have offIf absolutely necessary, call in sick Weekends work well, too. While a traditional mental health day generally includes taking a day off from work, its not necessary to call in sick to take a day to focus on stress relief. How to Cope With Mental Health Stigma What to Expect Knowing what you can expect to get out of a mental health day is important. Its important to remember that it isnt a day to hide from your problems.   An effective mental health day can help you: DestressReset your perspectiveTake a step back to evaluateGet a handle on your emotionsRelaxRest Problems can seem harder to deal with when they seem close, overwhelming, and inescapable. Taking a mental break from work and spending some time on self-care can sometimes give you that mini-break you need to head back into things with a clear head. Decide What You Need Most Sometimes this one is a no-brainerâ€"if youre exhausted, your body will be screaming that it needs to rest; if you feel you cant face another day of hard work, you may just need to have some fun. However, if youre feeling overwhelmed, you may not be as aware of your needs. Take a minute and really reflect: would you benefit the most from some tension relief? Or from making a few changes that will relieve stress in the future? Some time with a loved one? Or just a change of scenery? As different stressors require different responses, different types of mental health days fill unique needs. If You Need to Relax Taking a mental health day often means taking time out to relax. That can mean watching TV  in pajamas for hours or puttering around the house and doing nothing, and as long as this isnt an everyday thing, thats fine. However, some activities can take a little front-end effort and feel immensely relaxing once theyre completed. Some things you can try include:?? Taking a walk in natureAttending a yoga classSwimming at the gymGetting a massage The key is to spend time doing an activity that you find relaxing, whether its taking a hike, exploring a museum, or just spending some time immersed in a good book. Things NOT to Do Binge-watch TVAvoid friends and familySmoke, drink, or use other substancesOvereat unhealthy foodsRuminate or wallow in negative emotionsSpend all day reading posts on social media There are plenty of ways to spend your day, whether you decide to catch up on some much-needed sleep, indulge in a hobby you love, or hang out with a friend. Spend your day on activities that boost your physical and mental wellness. Simple Ways to Relax If You Need Some Fun If you really need a change of scenery and a Ferris Buellers Day Off kind of mental health day, be sure you make the most of it. Plan at least one fun eventâ€"either something you normally love to do and dont do enough  or something youve always wanted to try. Take along a good friend, if possible, to really make the day memorable. If nothing grabs your attention, try to engage in gratifications  or activities that provide just the right type of challenge: hobbies, games, and the like. If You Need to Make Some Changes If the stressors seem to pile up and youre looking for a way to slow down and stop the noise, you may want to take a day to restructure things. You may not be able to eliminate all of your ongoing stressors in a day, but you might be able to make a significant reduction in a few areas, and that may create a lasting impact on your stress levels. Start by: Create a list of things that drain your energyWork from there on eliminating stressorsTake a look at your prioritiesCut out some of your larger stressorsWork on increasing job satisfaction Dont expect to be able to take on all of this in a single day. If you want to use your mental health day to make real changes in your life, use it as a chance to evaluate, plan, and get ready to work on those changes. If You Need More of a Break If you need more of a break than just one day, consider taking a staycation or vacation. You may also consider whether youre headed toward burnout.  If youre concerned that your overall stress levels are greater than a mental health day, a vacation, or online resources can help, you may want to bring up your concerns with your doctor, or talk to a professional. There are many steps that can be taken to help. The Best Online Therapy Programs A Word From Verywell Look for ways to keep stress levels low and so that you dont wake up one morning in dire need of an emergency mental health day. Rhetorical Analysis Of Lean On Me - 715 Words

Rhetorical Analysis of Joe Clark’s Inspirational Speech in the motion picture Lean on Me, 1989 Lean on Me, a movie that debuted in 1989, showcases the real-life transformation of a destitute high school in New Jersey, by Principal Joe Clark. Clark was brought in by the city’s mayor in a final attempt to increase the pass rates of a state proctored test. Over the years, the school had been inundated with drug dealing and students with no interest in learning; coming into school to keep their parents from nagging about truancy. The student body was in a state of mayhem, the academics and confidence of the students and teachers were suffering. Clark, being known for his no non-sense attitude; even telling the teacher that is was their†¦show more content†¦I mean all of ya.† The impassioned response by the students clearly shows Clark has hit a nerve. This approach is undoubtedly demonstrating the use of pathos, emotionally provoking the students to prove the nay-sayers wrong. He continues this use of pathos by asking rhetorical questions such as â€Å"Are you getting my point?† and â€Å"Is it beginning to sink in?† To which the crowd cheers. He then begins an ascent into creating a hopeful family of students that had been looked down upon and ignored for far too long. â€Å"We sink. We swim. [pause] We rise. We fall. [pause] We meet our fate together!† His pauses are strategic between these affirmations, and are extremely effective and create stirring emotion. Applause breaks out and the students know Mr. Clark is not only supporting them, but he believes in them, each one. Clark continues to empower and motivate the students with- â€Å"You are NOT inferior! [pause] Your grades may be. [pause] You school may have been. [pause] But YOU can turn that around and make liars out of those bastards in exactly one hour when you take that test and pass it and WIN!† Not only his words, but his voice inflections are inspiring. The use of foul language in his speech proves to the students that he does not view them as children, but as young men and women that can handle such language and honesty. The first media source I researched was CNN World, the headline reads â€Å" Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid icon and father of South Africa, dies.† This headline has summed him up reflecting the person he was and the power he held in the worlds eyes. CNN highlight the facts that he was a freedom fighter, prisoner and a moral compass to his own people and the world. The E-Myth Revised (Summary) Free Essays

â€Å"THE E-MYTH REVISITED† ENTRE 300. WB1 Naim Al’Ali 3/11/13 The E-Myth revisited gave some wonderful insight as to the root cause of why most small businesses go under and don’t work. I learned a great deal by reading it and it has given me foresight as to what I need to improve in my skill set to become the best entrepreneur I can be without sabotaging anything of value to my business. We will write a custom essay sample on The E-Myth Revised (Summary) or any similar topic only for you Order Now The book focuses primarily on the entrepreneurial myth which is involved in a fatal assumption that the success of a business rides purely on the entrepreneur’s desire to own a business, the amount of capital he/she puts in, and Knowing the amount of targeted profit. The book teaches that this assumption could spell disaster rather than success. It also teaches us that the future of small businesses revolve around three concepts which are knowing the e-myth, understanding the turnkey revolution, and understanding the business development process. One of the most important concepts I learned from this book was the actual e-myth itself. Prior to reading the book, I too had this very same notion that was directly comparable to what is explained in the myth. This forced me to think differently about what actually makes a business successful because if not for this book I would have this in the dark feeling. The book talks about how entrepreneurs should get in the habit of thinking more about the business itself, the people involved in it, and the phases it normally undergoes. Having knowledge of these things can have a beneficial impact of your business. A second key concept that I learned from the book was that of the three main characters which are the technician, the manager, and the entrepreneur. The technician is an expert in whatever craft they are in and doesn’t mind doing the work but neglects other responsibilities of going into business even though they are eager to do so. The manager is detail oriented and wants a well organized environment that is very predictable. The entrepreneur is the dreamer, who sets out to do something new and who often lives in the future and get frustrated by how â€Å"slow the world is moving. The book teaches us that these are not separate people but rather distinct elements of our personalities. It also says that the reason why most small businesses don’t work is because they are run by a technician or someone who knows the technical workings of the business but neglects the other two equally important personalities. So the bottom line is that even though we are biased towards one of these personalities, we all have them and to be successful, you need to be able to utilize all three of these roles. All of these roles are necessary in the founder of a business. Without the entrepreneur, you might as well keep working for someone as a technician. Without the technician, the entrepreneur must rely on other people to get things done and without the abilities of a manager; the other two characters would find themselves in a disorganized and non functional environment. A third important concept that I learned from this books is the idea to â€Å"work on your business rather than in it. † This was a big one for me and it really stuck out because it opened my eyes to how many business owners are really just doing a job for their business rather than running it. For example, if you start a business where you can’t leave when u want because work will be unfinished, then you are not actually working on your business as an owner but rather as an employee. This could put a strain on other things that may have been planned for your business. It also hinders other abilities since so much time has to be put in for you to get paid. I couldn’t agree more with this statement because it seems like for a lot of business owners think they are in business for themselves but if they don’t work, they don’t eat and that is not being a business owner. This also ties into class discussions when it pertains to one of the biggest problems with part time entrepreneurs is the risk of burnout because of all the extra activity you have to put into you business to keep it running. In essence, what the book is saying is that they don’t own a business, they own a job and you can’t close it when you want because you won’t get paid, you can’t leave when you want because work won’t get done, and you can’t sell it when you want because no one wants to buy a job. A fourth and final concept I took from this book was the importance of the business development process. This process is the response of the ever changing dynamics of the business world and will equip an entrepreneur with the necessary tools they need to adapt to the continuous changes happening around them. The book described three elemental stages which are innovation, quantification, and orchestration. This is also a powerful concept that I particularly agree with. The book explains that innovation is the creativity applied to products or services to make them better and that continuous innovation is needed to improve your business. Quantification is figuring out what works for your business and being able to measure whether it is worth taking the risk. Orchestration is the standardization of what works and becomes the essential part of your business that everyone learns and knows so that it can produce consistent quality for your customers. This is really important information to have because its uniform and it’s a streamline way of tackling issues head on. This also ties into what we have learned in class about having a solid plan of attack. As it says in the book, â€Å"any plan is better than no plan at all†, and this couldn’t be anything more than truth. Although I would much rather suggest having a well thought out plan that could be of some benefit rather than a half-way done plan that could demolish your business. With all of these concepts I have learned in the book, I had to sit back and ask myself what I will do with this information. One thing I would definitely take heed to is the notion of being able to work on my business instead of in it because I don’t want to be stuck in a job for the rest of my life in order to put food on the table. So I would much rather design a system that can continue to pay me even if I’ve taken some time off. Another thing I could use these concepts for is when formulating my business plan/plans for this class and in the future so that I have strategy to uphold rather than letting the chips fall where they may. A third thing I could uses these concepts to move forward with is with getting out of the mythical mind frame that has cost countless business owners their livelihoods and to start thinking differently on where success in a business actually stems from rather than generalizing the solution to just the entrepreneurial aspect. This will alter my attitude towards conducting business and ultimately prove to be better for me in the long run. Finally, I would use this information to better understand what type of business person I need to be in order to deal with the ever changing business world. This could help me adapt to situations that I wouldn’t normally know how to handle having not been exposed to the reality of it. All in all, there wasn’t too much I disagreed with when it came to the material in this book, so I can safely say it will be a driving force in my business prowess and my future. Human trafficking is a very real problem around the world, it is captured as modern-day slavery, and has impacted thousands of mostly women and children globally. Human trafficking is growing faster than any other trade profiting in the millions of dollars. So, where does the money come from, and where does it go? The traffickers take the women and children and sell them for sexual acts of any d egree. These women and children come from dysfunctional families, some have lack of education, are homeless or poverty-stricken. The victims are mentally and physically abused, and tortured sometimes to no end. State the refined research question and hypothesis (null and alternative). Is exploitation related to human trafficking? How do we protect people and? assist people who have trafficked, also how do we as a people stop this source of monetary means? Researcher's tried to find out where trafficking occurs, some agencies will help where others do not, because we need to understand them cultures, something that is absolute. What are your independent and dependent variables? What are their operational definitions? "Human trafficking involves the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receiving a person, by threat, use of force, coercion, or abduction for exploitation. e xploitation shall include prostitution, f orced labor, slavery s ervitude, use of child sol diers, or the removal of organs. " Variables; quality or characteristics which ha ve two or more possible values. The important variables "emerge" as data collected. Independent variable- researcher directly manipulates, and the dependent variable is human behavior, physical health and well - being, and quality/quantity. Variables: Sexual trafficking: a commercial sex act that is induced by force, fraud, or Coercion which the person is to perform. Victims: women age 18 or older. Resources: programs that help with jobs, education, family, housing and everything pertaining to family and recovery for the victim. Who will be included in your sample (i.e., inclusion and exclusion characteristics)? Snowball sampling will be used to find a hidden population, meaning these Participants do not make their cho ice to be seen, or tell their st ory. As in the technique we would identify one participant who meets the needs for research then go from there getting names and numbers, like an assembly line , for the potential of twenty participants. Inclusion and exclusion characteristics to use; educational materials used to inform, educate, or guidance for health professionals on human trafficking (e.g. identification, treatment , documentation, and prevention). How many participants will you have in your sample? I would like to have at least twenty participants to start, but more likely end up with ten to start to see how it goes. I would like to end with around fifty. Maybe I should start with ten then add more. How will you recruit your sample? Recruiting should be easy as I would go through government agencies to find programs that deal with human trafficking, their victims. Identify the type of measurement instrument to be used to collect the raw Numeric data to be statistically analyzed and the type of measurement data the instrument produces . Data at ordinal level there might be differences the data , such as most/least satisfied. Ordinal-level is used to order participants on differences but unequal spacing between participants. There is no order to it. We will need the variables defined; human trafficking, sex trafficking, victims, and resources, What issues will you cover in the informed consent? Prior to interview, and following the information of the study, the participants were asked for written consent. They could ask questions first, so a decision could be made whether to go along with the inter view, knowledge is better before- hand. The consent form will make it clears as to what the study is about. It also covers all confidentially of the participant. All data will be looked at to understand the relationship to each category discussed. Issues to cover will be quite personal; asking how it happened to become a victim, what age did it first happen, what was life like being trafficked, what kind of

Gladiator Essays

Gladiator Essays Gladiator Essay Gladiator Essay At the start of the scene just before battle you see the camera follow the soldiers up the stairs making the arena look massive and interestingly making you feel like your in the stadium. The camera is then seen from behind the crowd tilting down on the stadium. The camera movement here is used to give you an overall view of what is going on in the arena and what Maximus and the others are up against. There are also panning shots used which emphasize how massive the crowd is and give us an impression of what the landscape is and looks like. Just before they are due to battle there are different types of shots used again to emphasize the size of the stadium making Maximus and the fellow slaves look increasingly small. This type of shot is used to show that they are weak, small and not strong. This then cuts to close ups of Maximus and his two closest companions showing us that they are discussing an alternative rather then endure the fate that is being put forward. This is giving us hope seeing the emotion on his companions faces, showing us that they are nodding and listening. As the soldiers faces are featured in close-ups, their expressions indicate their faith in the generals abilities. When they are in battle the camera cleverly follows the warrior on a horse mounted carriage and this makes you feel like you are in the battle scene, it also makes you feel like the blade on the carriage is inches away from you as its spinning in action. Long shots are then used again to give you an overview of the battle and the cutting back and forth between characters keep you in suspense. The shots of Maximus on the white horse towards the end of battle also make him look extremely powerful. I noticed that to enhance this they have also cut out the other characters and focused sole ly on Maximus. Towards the end of the scene when you see Maximus defeat them the panning shot of the crowd is done to show that they are honouring him and supporting him. This brings you to feel close to the character and the chanting from his supporters makes you feel like your there in the crowd and make you want to join in. When Maximus is confronted by the Emperor you notice that there are mostly close ups used to show the emotion and tension between the two rivals. : The lighting at the start of the scene is extremely dark as they are in what it seems like a tunnel. You can hardly see any of the characters as the lighting is dark, grey and dull. Thus making us feel that the characters are trapped. They then proceed to walk up in lines of rows like robots with grey dark shadows appearing beside them. I felt at this bit they were in trouble and probably not going to win against whatever it was they were up against. When they arrive on the battlefield it then becomes a lot brighter and I noticed that in the crowd you see several bright lines of bold red and yellow this looking like fire from a distance. I think this was used to show the danger of the grounds and added a fiery feeling. The colour of the slaves armour and the grounds fairly matched this making the whole scene look in tact. Most of the colours used in the scene are bold rich colours such as reds, blues, gold and silver. When Maximus is confronted by the Emperor you will notice that the lighting on the emperor is dark and shadowy. This portraying the Emperor as dark and evil in a sense, his face is gradually touched by rays of light but he still comes across as gloomy and pale. However the gladiators face is a lot brighter and clearer basically portraying him as the good guy. The costumes used in the scene are mainly heavy armour such as helmets, axes, swords and other weapons and shields. The swords can symbolize power in many different ways, and towards the end when Commodus is deciding weather Maximus will live or not you see various swords being pointed towards him in that direction, this indicating that at the time Commodus is the ruler and a lot higher and more powerful then Maximus. Also you will notice with this being set historically there are a lot of robes and head and hand jewelry. The footwear that is used is plain and simple such as sandals and leather boots. Having the right costumes in the film have really prepared you for every little detail. I think some of the special effects that were used in the film were mainly to do with the historic roman architecture and buildings such as the arena and stadium. You will also see thousands and thousands of people in the crowds, this mainly being computer generated. I think the reason for this is to give it that realism feel and to show that Maximus had that many supporters. I also think it has that feel because the whole storyline is actually closely based on real events. Also the music that was used throughout the clip is extremely in tact from when they were starting to battle right through to when they are talking and conversing. In the scene you see him as a slave then a warrior/hero then revolutionary. In the battle scene you see them all plotting and working together and this really interpelates you, giving you hope that they will all make it through. They courageously fight together, act together and save each other which keeps you in suspense guessing if they will all survive. I think this was a classic act to keep you watching. When Maximus and his fellow slaves defeat them it really makes you want to jump up and down. The violence in the scene reveals the character of Maximus and encourages us to participate emotionally. I have noticed that the link in the scene to make it more interesting is that Maximus is seen as a slave however throughout the film has been conquering barbarians that eventually became slaves. The barbarians he defeated in Rome suffer the fate that is eventually his too. In the scene he also created skilful and powerful tactics which were acknowledged by the rest because by this time he has gained the respect of the fellow gladiators all of this portraying Maximus as a powerful leader and displaying his character. The plot of the film is that Maximus a roman general is favored over Commodus the power hungry son of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He is chosen to rule however Commodus has his family murdered and as he comes to Rome, he becomes a Gladiator and seeks revenge. The dialect in the clip also helps to communicate the whole theme of the film.

Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Conquistador and Explorer

Vasco Nà ºÃƒ ±ez de Balboa, Conquistador and Explorer Vasco Nà ºÃƒ ±ez de Balboa (1475–1519) was a Spanish conquistador, explorer, and administrator. He is best known for leading the first European expedition to sight the Pacific Ocean, or the South Sea as he referred to it. He is still remembered and venerated in Panama as a heroic explorer. Fast Facts: Vasco Nà ºÃƒ ±ez de Balboa Known For: First European sighting of the Pacific Ocean and colonial governance in what is now PanamaBorn: 1475 in Jerà ©z de los Caballeros, Extremadura province, CastileParents: Differing historical accounts of parents names: his family was noble but no longer wealthySpouse: Marà a de Peà ±alosaDied: January 1519 in Acla, near present-day Darià ©n, Panama Early Life Nuà ±ez de Balboa was born into a noble family that was no longer wealthy. His father and mother were both of noble blood in Badajoz, Spain and Vasco was born in Jerà ©z de los Caballeros in 1475. Although noble, Balboa could not hope for much in the way of even a meager inheritance, as he was the third of four sons. All titles and lands were passed to the eldest; younger sons generally went into the military or clergy. Balboa opted for the military, spending time as a page and squire at the local court. America By 1500, word had spread all over Spain and Europe of the wonders of the New World and the fortunes being made there. Young and ambitious, Balboa joined the expedition of Rodrigo de Bastidas in 1500. The expedition was mildly successful in raiding the northeastern coast of South America. In 1502, Balboa landed in Hispaniola with enough money to set himself up with a small pig farm. He was not a very good farmer, however, and by 1509 he was forced to flee his creditors in Santo Domingo. Back to the Darien Balboa stowed away (with his dog) on a ship commanded by Martà n Fernndez de Enciso, who was heading to the recently-founded town of San Sebastin de Urab with supplies. He was quickly discovered and Enciso threatened to maroon him, but the charismatic Balboa talked him out of it. When they reached San Sebastin they found that natives had destroyed it. Balboa convinced Enciso and the survivors of San Sebastin (led by Francisco Pizarro) to try again and establish a town, this time in the Darià ©n- a region of dense jungle between present-day Colombia and Panama. Santa Marà a la Antigua del Darià ©n The Spaniards landed in the Darià ©n and were quickly beset by a large force of natives under the command of Cà ©maco, a local chieftain. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Spanish prevailed and founded the city of Santa Marà a la Antigua de Darià ©n on the site of Cà ©macos old village. Enciso, as ranking officer, was put in charge but the men detested him. Clever and charismatic, Balboa rallied the men behind him and removed Enciso by arguing that the region was not part of the royal charter of Alonso de Ojeda, Encisos master. Balboa was one of two men quickly elected to serve as mayors of the city. Veragua Balboas stratagem of removing Enciso backfired in 1511. It was true that Alonso de Ojeda (and therefore, Enciso) had no legal authority over Santa Marà a, which had been founded in an area referred to as Veragua. Veragua was the domain of Diego de Nicuesa, a somewhat unstable Spanish nobleman who had not been heard from in some time. Nicuesa was discovered in the north with a handful of bedraggled survivors from an earlier expedition, and he decided to claim Santa Marà a for his own. The colonists preferred Balboa, however, and Nicuesa was not even allowed to go ashore: Indignant, he set sail for Hispaniola but was never heard from again. Governor Balboa was effectively in charge of Veragua at this point and the crown reluctantly decided to simply recognize him as governor. Once his position was official, Balboa quickly began organizing expeditions to explore the region. The local tribes of indigenous natives were not united and were powerless to resist the Spanish, who were better armed and disciplined. The colonizers collected much gold and pearls through their military power, which in turn drew more men to the settlement. They began hearing rumors of a great sea and a rich kingdom to the south. Expedition to the South The narrow strip of land which is Panama and the northern tip of Colombia runs east to west, not north to south as some might suppose. Therefore, when Balboa, along with about 190 Spaniards and a handful of natives, decided to search for this sea in 1513, they headed mostly south, not west. They fought their way through the isthmus, leaving many wounded behind with friendly or conquered chieftains. On September 25, Balboa and a handful of battered Spaniards (Francisco Pizarro was among them) first saw the Pacific Ocean, which they named the â€Å"South Sea.† Balboa waded into the water and claimed the sea for Spain. Pedrarà as Dvila The Spanish crown, still with some lingering doubt over whether or not Balboa had correctly handled Enciso, sent a massive fleet to Veragua (now named Castilla de Oro) under the command of veteran soldier Pedrarà as Dvila. Fifteen hundred men and women flooded the tiny settlement. Dvila had been named governor to replace Balboa, who accepted the change with good humor, although the colonists still preferred him to Dvila. Dvila proved to be a poor administrator and hundreds of settlers died, mostly those who had sailed with him from Spain. Balboa tried to recruit some men to explore the South Sea without Dvila knowing, but he was found out and arrested. Vasco and Pedrarà as Santa Marà a had two leaders: officially, Dvila was governor, but Balboa was more popular. They continued to clash until 1517 when it was arranged for Balboa to marry one of Dvila’s daughters. Balboa married Marà a de Peà ±alosa despite an obstacle: she was in a convent in Spain at the time and they had to marry by proxy. In fact, she never left the convent. Before long, the rivalry flared up again. Balboa left Santa Marà a for the small town of Aclo with 300 of those who still preferred his leadership to that of Dvila. He was successful in establishing a settlement and building some ships. Death Fearing the charismatic Balboa as a potential rival, Dvila decided to get rid of him once and for all. Balboa was arrested by a squad of soldiers led by Francisco Pizarro as he made preparations to explore the Pacific coast of northern South America. He was hauled back to Aclo in chains and quickly tried for treason against the crown: The charge was that he had tried to establish his own independent fiefdom of the South Sea, independent from that of Dvila. Enraged, Balboa shouted out that he was a loyal servant of the crown, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. He was beheaded in January of 1519 along with four of his companions (there are conflicting accounts of the exact date of the execution). Without Balboa, the colony of Santa Marà a quickly failed. Where he had cultivated positive ties with local natives for trade, Dvila enslaved them, resulting in short-term economic profit but long-term disaster for the colony. In 1519, Dvila forcibly moved all of the settlers to the Pacific side of the isthmus, founding Panama City, and by 1524 Santa Marà a had been razed by angry natives. Legacy The legacy of Vasco Nuà ±ez de Balboa is brighter than that of many of his contemporaries. While many  conquistadors, such as  Pedro de Alvarado,  Hernn Cortà ©s,  and  Pnfilo de Narvaez  are today remembered for cruelty, exploitation, and inhuman treatment of natives, Balboa is remembered as an explorer, fair administrator, and popular governor who made his settlements work. As for relations with natives, Balboa was guilty of his share of atrocities, including enslavement and setting his dogs on homosexual men in one village. In general, however, he is thought to have dealt with his native allies well, treating them with respect and friendship which translated into beneficial trade and food for his settlements. Although he and his men were the first to see the Pacific Ocean while heading west from the New World, it would be  Ferdinand Magellan  who would get the credit for naming it when he rounded the southern tip of South America in 1520. Balboa is best remembered in  Panama, where many streets, businesses, and parks bear his name. There is a stately monument in his honor in Panama City (a district of which bears his name) and the national currency is called the Balboa. There is even a lunar crater named after him. Developmental theories - Essay Example Each of the stages of development in Erikson's theory is a "sensitive phase" that represents the optimum time period within which to resolve a crisis (Slater & Bremner, 2003). Whether the resolution is positive or negative, the results function as the foundation of the next crisis period (Slater & Bremner, 2003). Middle childhood, was also termed the Latency stage by Erikson and occurred during the ages of 6-11 years (Slater & Bremner, 2003). The beginning of this period paralleled the concrete operational stage of cognitive development of Jean Piaget's (1952), where the child begins to conceptualise more systematically, can consider several factors of a situation at once (decentration), begins to classify and categorize, and can perform conservation (as cited in Austrian, 2002). The child must resolve the socio-emotional conflict of inferiority vs. accomplishment (Slater & Bremner, 2003). Children at this time are encouraged to work together on tasks and so the child compares their ability to create and achieve goals with the achievements met by their peers (Austrian, 2002). The significant others at this time, according to Erikson, will be peers at school and in their neighbourhood (Slater & Bremner, 2003). However, their social sphere in general is extending beyond their parents and famil y, to incorporate teachers and other members of the community with whom they are coming into more contact with (Slater & Bremner, 2003). As such, all these social beings contribute to the socio-emotional growth of the child (Slater & Bremner, 2003). Systematic instruction is required for the child during the latency stage, with the direct involvement of relevant role models critical to the child's development of a sense of industry (Coughlan & Welsh-Breetzke, 2002). Lev Vygotsky (1978) also emphasised the critical need for social interaction for development, although his theory focused on the social process of learning for cognitive development (as cited in Austrian, 2002). According to moral theory of Lawrence Kholberg (1970), middle childhood is a time of progressing from the stages of preconventional to conventional morality (as cited in Austrian, 2002). Hence, the opinions of social others become more important and the child's behaviour conforms to meet social norms (Austrian, 2 002).Erikson viewed the latency period as a developmental period where the child must learn to tame their imagination, and orient themselves towards learning the social norms of their culture, and of learning the educational requirements for their age (Slater & Bremner, 2003). The child continues to develop their sense of autonomy and independence as initiated in the

Can Teaching The Key Ideas Of Object Orientation Be Aided By Using Dissertation

Can Teaching The Key Ideas Of Object Orientation Be Aided By Using Visual Representations - Dissertation Example Object oriented programming, however, remains an outstanding anomaly when it comes to teaching the concepts and the comprehension thereof. Much as it is difficult to introduce object oriented programming to novice, it also remains a nightmare to experienced procedural programmers to grasp the anthropomorphic perspective necessary for object-oriented design. Below are some of the shortcomings encountered when introducing (OOP) to a novice Paradigm shift. According to Schoenfeld et al. (1993) replacing one idea with another is not a simple task. Why then is OOP difficult for learners to comprehend Well to be able to answer this question perhaps we need to turn around, and view this menace from this spectrum; when should object-oriented programming be taught Due to the fact that Object oriented programming was considered as an advanced subject that was taught late in the curriculum, this must have dealt a mega psychological blow upon the minds of the learners. This is slowly changing: more Universities have started to teach object-orientation in their first programming course. The main reason for doing this is the often-cited problem of the paradigm shift. Learning to program in an object-oriented style seems to be very difficult after being used to a procedural style. (Anecdotal evidence, 1999 indicates that it takes the average programmer 6 to 18 months to switch her mind-set from a procedural to an object-oriented view of the world. ) Experience, on the other hand, also shows that students do not seem to have any difficulty-understanding object oriented principles when they encounter them for the first time. The Communications Decency Act :: essays research papers fc

The Communications Decency Act The U.S. Government should not attempt to place restrictions on the internet. The Internet does not belong to the United States and it is not our responsibility to save the world, so why are we attempting to regulate something that belongs to the world? The Telecommunications Reform Act has done exactly that, put regulations on the Internet. Edward Cavazos quotes William Gibson says, "As described in Neuromancer, Cyberspace was a consensual hallucination that felt and looked like a physical space but actually was a computer-generated construct representing abstract data." (1) When Gibson coined that phrase he had no idea that it would become the household word that it is today. "Cyberspace now represents a vast array of computer systems accessible from remote physical locations." (Cavazos 2) The Internet has grown explosively over the last few years. "The Internet's growth since its beginnings in 1981. At that time, the number of host systems was 213 machines. At the time of this writing, twelve years later, the number has jumped to 1,313,000 systems connecting directly to the Internet." (Cavazos 10) "Privacy plays a unique role in American law." (Cavazos 13) Privacy is not explicitly provided for in the Constitution, yet most of the Internet users remain anonymous. Cavazos says, "Computers and digital communication technologies present a serious challenge to legislators and judges who try to meet the demands of economic and social change while protecting this most basic and fundamental personal freedom." Networks and the Internet make it easy for anyone with the proper equipment to look at information based around the world instantly and remain anonymous. "The right to conduct at least some forms of speech activity anonymously has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court." (Cavazos 15) In cyberspace it is extremely uncommon for someone to use their given name to conduct themselves, but rather they use pseudonyms or "Handles". (Cavazos 14) Not only is it not illegal to use handles on most systems, but the sysop (System Operator) does not have to allow anyone access to his data files on who is the person behind the handle. Some sysops make the information public, or give the option to the user, or don't collect the information at all. The Internet brings forth many new concerns regarding crime and computers. With movies like Wargames, and more recently Hackers, becoming popular, computer crime is being blown out of proportion. "The word Hacker conjures up a vivid image in the popular media." (Cavazos 105) There are many types of computer crime that fall under the umbrella of "Hacking". Cavazos says, "In 1986 Congress passed a comprehensive federal law outlawing many of the activities

Civil Disobedience: Cost of Change

Aila Pena Dr. Schuetze-Coburn Contemporary Composition, Period 5 March 4, 2013 Civil Disobedience: The cost of change More than 40,000 strong activists from the Sierra Club protested at the White House to reject the Keystone XL Pipeline proposal. They protested because they the extraction of tar sand oil and moving it from Canada to Texas will pollute the groundwater in the surface (Hammel). Civil disobedience is â€Å"the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government, or of an occupying international power† (Civil Disobedience).Throughout history, civil disobedience was a way to get the people’s attention that the government’s idea is immoral and unfair. It is a way to make a change in law or policy and to take action in a non-violent resistance. The act of civil disobedience is effective in our society, for example, Mohandas Gandhi protest against the British rule for India’s independence, Martin Luther King, Jr. à ¢â‚¬â„¢s civil rights action, and the Sierra Club protest to neglect the Keystone XL pipeline. These titles,†On the Relation of the Individual to the State,† â€Å"Resistance to Civil Government,† Civil Disobedience,† and â€Å"A Yankee in Canada with Anti-Slave and Reform Papers,† have different title but all of them have the same concept. Henry David Thoreau’s concept of civil disobedience started at the Mexican-American war. He refused to pay taxes because he knows the taxes are going to the war and slavery. His action resulted being put in jail. In his focus of his beliefs in slavery and the war, he wrote an essay known as â€Å"Civil Disobedience. † According to Thoreau, the main idea of civil disobedience is about â€Å"unjust laws exist† (203).His essay means that sometimes the government make laws that are injustice and it is the people duty or right to stop the law that the government made. He explained what of civil disob edience is and how the people have the right to oppose an immoral state of the government. â€Å"Civil Disobedience† has two principles: first is the power of authority and second is the right of the people to disobey the unjust laws (Civil Disobedience-The History of the Concept). For many centuries, it had a great impact was and still is an important role around the world. Over the years, the Indians were furious and angry at the British authorities.Tensions rose between both the Indians and the British government due to the fight for the country and independence. A leader of the independence movement rose in India, Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi perfected civil disobedience by using non-violent revolution and was influenced by Thoreau’s concept about civil disobedience. Example of Gandhi’s non-violent resistance, Gandhi’s form of nonviolent resistance was to influenced the Indians to refuse buying British goods and make their own product (Gandhi). The Indians got the British’s attention that they are going to be a problem economically. After many protest and mass demonstrations by Gandhi and the Indians, it caused them many innocent lives such as the Amristar Massacre. The British made a salt law, it means that they are the only one who can produce and sell salts. The Salt March was the key that change the Indians to their new modern life : On April 5, 1930 Gandhi and his satyagrahis reached the coast. After prayers were offered, Gandhi spoke to the large crowd. He picked up a tiny lump of salt, breaking the law. Within moments, the satyagrahis followed Gandhi's passive defiance, picking up salt everywhere along the coast.A month later, Gandhi was arrested and thrown into prison, already full with fellow protestors. The Salt March started a series of protests, closing many British shops and British mills. [†¦ ] The world embraced the satyagrahis and their non-violence, and eventually enabled India to gain their freedom from B ritain. (Benner) The protest brought down the British’s economy which caused the British government to leave the country. They gained their equality, freedom and independence. His protest drew the attention of millions of people around the world and influenced many countries to fight for what is right and moral. The most famous leader of civil rights movement is Martin Luther King, Jr. and the man who fought for the civil rights of the African-American people. He used a non-violent method to gained and protected the rights of African-American. It started on the refusal of buying at Alabama and refusal of seating at the back of the bus. One of the well known march he did was â€Å"more than 250,000 protesters to Washington, DC, where King delivered his famous ‘I have a dream’ speech in which he envisioned a world where people were no longer divided by race† (Tutu). Many civil rights protesters supported his belief that all race should have equality, freedom a nd justice. As Tutu continues to explain, he concluded that the â€Å"Congress enacted the Civil Rights Act in 1964. † It was a breakthrough for the African-American because it was a law that approved Martin Luther King’s goal to protect their rights. It became an American tradition to use civil disobedience in hundreds and hundreds of different movements. There are two sides in the controversy of Keystone XL Pipeline: TransCanada vs Sierra Club. The Sierra Club protest against the Keystone XL Pipeline because they believe that it is the reason for climate change and the destruction of the environment. The tar sand oil also known as the dirtiest oil will be extract from the ground like we dig deep through our closet to find the clothes we want to wear. TransCanada believe that their pipeline will not hurt the environment and the president stated: â€Å"the oil sands represent only one-tenth of 1 percent of global greenhouse emissions† (TransCanada Says Keystone X L Oil Pipeline Would Have No Measurable Effect on Global Warming). He argues to the protesters that the pipeline will only cause a little of gas emissions in the atmosphere. But the club is still not persuaded and still accepted the fact that it is a hazard. They are still resisting in a nonviolent method. Some Sierra Club members were arrested because â€Å"activists have placed themselves onto the north-facing fence of the White House to protest [†¦ ] has cuffed himself onto the fence† (48 Arrested at White House Fence in Opposition to Keystone XL). The act of the Sierra Club got the newspapers, American people and Obama’s attention. It is delaying the decision of President Obama and the State Department to approve or reject it. Another one reason why it is effective because they persuaded Obama to thwart: â€Å"Obama said he will use executive authority to cut greenhouse gas pollution if Congress fails to act† (TransCanada Says Keystone XL Oil Pipeline Wou ld Have No Measurable Effect on Global Warming). The protest made a change on persuading Obama even though the decision is still unknown by the State Department. In many occasions, civil disobedience have been effective throughout history and in the modern time.Civil disobedience is about people using violent and non-violent method to state that a law, demand and concept of the government is unfair. It is the first time that the Sierra Club done the act of civil disobedience and it took them more than 100 years to be where they’re at now. Inanimate Noun Definition and Examples

A semantic category of noun that refers to a place, thing, or idea— not a person, animal, or other creature. Contrast with animate noun. Examples and Observations Bill Clinton loves to shop. On a March day in an elegant crafts store in Lima, the Peruvian capital, he hunted for presents for his wife and the women on his staff back home. He had given a speech at a university earlier and just came from a ceremony kicking off a program to help impoverished Peruvians. Now he was eyeing a necklace with a green stone amulet. (Peter Baker, Its Not About Bill, The New York Times Magazine, May 31, 2009)Your complaints about late delay are not only completely unjustified, but also ungrammatical. The fault lies in your inability to fill in an order form correctly. You are, in effect, a pompous, illiterate baboon. (Leonard Rossiter in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, 1976)Amir has just counted our luggage and in all we have twenty-one pieces, counting cameras, guns, bags, boxes, trunks, umbrellas, etc. Our boat to Singapore is just a few hundred feet away from this hotel and it looks very big and nice. (Rosamonds letter to Bub, Jan. 3, 1907. Letters W ritten While on a Collecting Trip in the East Indies, by Thomas Barbour and Rosamond Barbour, 1913)[W]hen using language figuratively or in childrens stories (e.g., The tugboat smiled as she safely guided the ocean liner through the channel), human characteristics may be assigned to an inanimate noun as denoted by the use of smiled and she. (Virginia A. Heidinger, Analyzing Syntax and Semantics. Gallaudent Univ. Press, 1984)The most cited gendered reference to an inanimate object today may be the use of she to refer to ships. This usage was first noted by Ben Jonson in his English Grammar of 1640; he names ships as an exception to the rule that it refers to inanimate objects... In 2002, it was announced that Lloyds List, the worlds best-known source of maritime business news and information, would stop using she in reference to ships, switching over instead to it. (Anne Curzan, Gender Shifts in the History of English. Cambridge Univ. Press, 2003) Possessive Forms of Inanimate Nouns Many English teachers advise against applying the possessive case to inanimate objects. Possession is a privilege limited to living things. It does not make sense for a car or a house or a bicycle to own anything in the way that the possessive case expresses ownership. The type of possession allowed inanimate objects is typically expressed by the phrase beginning with of: the roof of the house not the houses roofthe hood of the car not the cars hoodthe tire of the bike not the bikes tire Like many grammar issues, however, this one requires a judgment call. Through popular usage, some nouns that name inanimate objects have acquired the rights to their possessive case forms: my minds eyea moments delaya weeks vacationtwo weeks noticethe suns raysthe Seasons Greetings At times creative license may grant you the right to make use of an inanimate object in a possessive form. Gender And Sexuality As A Category For Historical Analysis

For years, many scholars have provided many discussions over the topic of gender and sexuality. However, one needs to ask themselves: Are these two topics, gender and sexuality, useful as a category for historical analysis? The articles written by both Joan W. Scott and Afsaneh Najmabadi, answer such a question. By critically examining and assessing their two article, can the usefulness of gender and sexuality as a category for historical analysis be proven. In â€Å"Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis,† Joan W. Scott provides many angles to explore the relevancy of gender. The first thing that needs to be examined is her argument. The main argument that Joan W. Scott is trying to make is how beneficial to history using gender as a category for analysis would turn out. Another factor that needs to be made in assessing her article is how she presents her argument and findings. Scott formats her article with a beginning, middle, and end. She begins by defining â€Å"gender,† and how that term has been used in general. She goes on to describe some of the theories that have analyzed gender. The next part that she explains is how, of late, politics has been coincided with the analysis of gender. Finally, she ends her paper by providing her bottom-line opinion about the analysis and approach of gender. Now with the structure of her paper in mind, the next important assessment is in the sources she uses. The sources that Joan Scott utilizes in her argument are mostlyShow MoreRelatedGender And Gender Identity1648 Words   |  7 PagesIn light of performativity, political transformation via hegemonic cultural practices continues to advocate for gender parody. Not only do many people use social media these days, but we could use social media to incorporate some of the traditional media styles. For example, we could use Facebook to get a video out stating our side of this issue. On the downside, many feel as though social media is not as intimate. We need to remember that the receiver of the electronic communications is not able to observe other important elements of the message that often come up with face-to-face interactions: tone of voice, facial expressions, and body posture, for example (Cheesebro, OConnor, amp; Rios, 2010). TIGHTENING THE LINK BETWEEN WELLBING AT WORK AND PERFORMANCE Free Essays

string(148) " sentiment study of a peculiar group of employees working for the authorities may non be able to stand for the positions of all types of employees\." Abstraction: The intent of this academic essay is to reexamine the research work under the rubric ‘Tightening the nexus between employee wellbeing at work and public presentation ‘ by the erudite scholar Nicole Renee Baptiste with the purpose to take the academic treatment further. The research work is good presented and rich in footings of cognition, grounds and recommendations. The subject of research is a modern-day issue of great significance, peculiarly in this clip of economic downswing. We will write a custom essay sample on TIGHTENING THE LINK BETWEEN WELLBING AT WORK AND PERFORMANCE or any similar topic only for you Order Now Sum-total of organisational success reflects on the economic growing at the national degree and that is why effectual and efficient organisational operation, be it in the public sector or private subdivision, has ever been on the top of the docket of the policy shapers and organisational leaders. In add-on, organisational success depends to a big portion on the well-being of the employees. In other words, a happy work force leads to better concern public presentation – is the subject under reappraisal. Introduction: ‘Life anticipation and Numberss in employment are higher than of all time before, yet around 175 million on the job yearss were lost to illness in 2006 ( Dame Carol Black ‘s Review of the wellness of Britain ‘s working population ‘Working for a healthier tomorrow ‘ presented to the Secretary of State for Health and the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, 17 March 2008. The policy shapers are in the procedure of reexamining work topographic point patterns in relation to well-being and promoting thoughts to better concern public presentation to be competitory in the planetary market that signifies the importance to wellbeing every bit justly depicted by the writer. In order to foster the academic treatment, the undermentioned points will be analyzed: The rubric of the research work: Tightening the nexus between employee wellbeing at work and public presentation. The impression of HRM as suggested on Page 2 of the research work. Performance Recent HR Concepts, e.g. , employee battle The job of such probe: how to divide well-being as a variable as a contributory factor to public presentation ‘HRM patterns ‘ on page 3 of the research paper. The HRM Practices – Employee voice – †¦ †¦ †¦ ‘and it is considered indispensable that workers have the chance to show their grudges openly and independently†¦ . ‘ Page 3 of the article may be problematic. Committedness, Job Satisfaction and Work-life balance are the constitutional elements of Wellbeing. But the issue is: committedness, occupation satisfaction and work-life balance are the result of a good well-being policy instead than being the component elements of wellbeing which may be unfastened to debate. In the Data Collection procedure male, female, age, length of service, type of business, making – all the elements were taken in into consideration but point has no reference, which is Ethnicity, which is unfastened to debate. Different ethical background may hold different perceptual experience of well-being. From a reading of the article under reappraisal, it seems the article is normative taking to prescriptive recommended policies which reflect a kind of theoretical account, the look used to analyse HR by Mike Noon, Re-assessing Human Resource Management, edited by Paul Blyton and Peter Turnbull, Sage Publications, 1996, page 16. Literature Reappraisal: Employee wellbeing as a construct to better organisational public presentation from the position of HR practician can be traced to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as authorities legislative intercession placed a responsibility of attention upon employers. ‘Employers have a legal responsibility under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 ( HSWA 1974 ) to guarantee, so far as is moderately operable, the wellness, safety and public assistance at work of their employees. ( HSWA 1974, s 2 ( 1 ) . The term used by the authorities has been welfare instead than wellbeing, which may bear the same significance except well-being, seems to be much broader in range. The writer takes the position that HRM is a unitary system of direction – which is a remarkable indorsement of managerial positions, is besides unfastened to debate. Today ‘s HR is really much based on common consent in about every facet of employer-employee relationship which may be in a redundancy state of affairs, enlisting and choice, subject, trade brotherhood dialogue et cetera. What makes the survey of HR hard is ‘the multiplicity of variable ‘ Charles Handy, Understanding Organizations, 4th edition, 1999, Penguin Books Reappraisal: Summary of the inquiries: The rubric of the research work: Tightening the nexus between employee wellbeing at work and public presentation. Appraisal The first issue which comes to mind as a referee is the rubric of the research paper ‘Tightening the nexus between employee wellbeing at work and public presentation. ‘ Harmonizing to the rubric, the writer does non stipulate which type of organisation is the article for, whether it is for the private sector or public sector or charity organisation, SMEs et cetera. If it assumed that the research paper is intended for all types of organisations, so the job is: the empirical analysis in local authorities in North England or an sentiment study of a peculiar group of employees working for the authorities may non be able to stand for the positions of all types of employees. You read "TIGHTENING THE LINK BETWEEN WELLBING AT WORK AND PERFORMANCE" in category "Essay examples" Percept on wellbeing differ from organisation to organisation. Aims and aims and public presentation are non the same or similar. In 1961, Burns and Stalker ( Mullins, L.J. ( 2005 ) . Management and Organization completed a survey of 20 UK fabrication houses to find the types of construction that existed. Finding concluded that two fundamentally contrasting signifiers existed – mechanistic and organic. Mechanistic Structures: Have a stiff construction Operate in stable environments Have undertakings that are specialized and functionally differentiated Have a hierarchal construction in which control and authorization predominate. # Organic Structures: Have fluid constructions that are more antiphonal to alter Operate in more turbulent/constantly altering environments Have undertakings that change on a regular basis with the concern Have an environment where cognition is spread throughout the organisation What has construction of an organisation got to make with wellbeing? To some extent, construction plays a really of import function in the makeup of the organisational personality which is the sum-total of the employees, direction manner, civilization of the organisation, type of employees recruited and selected, outlooks, industrial dealingss and the external environment T in which the organisation operates. All these factors may take to a perceptual difference in which well-being is viewed. Public or authorities sections are to some extent or similar to Mechanistic constructions where employees seem content with occupation stableness ( even the authorities sections are holding to confront up to recession ) – which means the wellbeing bundle from the perceptual experience of the contented employees may be different. This is an premise and at this minute of clip, no empirical grounds can be provided. On the other manus, private organisations and SMEs, charity organisations have another mentality in relation to well-being because, external force per unit area of competition, the competitory nature in order to last and prolong, public presentation related in footings of finance and net income – all seem to propose, that wellbeing is approached from a more fiscal position like immense wages taken by the organisation leaders which has come under onslaught by the populace and media late. At this minute, no empirical grounds can be provided to back up the above mentioned premises. On page 3 of the research work, the writer has to some extent equated Employee Voice with Grievance by the statement ‘ †¦ †¦ †¦ have the chance to show their grudges openly and independently, †¦ †¦ †¦ ..’Grievance is non the same as raising an issue. Employee voice is about engagement, battle, audiences and discoursing issues related to work without fright. To utilize the phrase ‘Grievance ‘ seems inappropriate. The impression of HRM Harmonizing to the writer ‘HRM will be defined as a set of patterns used to pull off the work force of an organisation, that is recruitment and choice, preparation and development, worker engagement, wage and wagess, flexibleness, engagement in decision-making, communications and employee public assistance. ‘ If the position of the writer is taken that HRM is a set of patterns, which means it is a map or managerial tool to work out managerial jobs, so the inquiry no theory is required to back up premises or no empirical grounds is required to back up premises. There is still a batch of argument about the true nature of HRM from the academic position, practicians view point and besides, from the position point of educationists who teach this subject. Harmonizing to Torrington et at. , ( 2005 ) , define HRM as, ‘Resource centered, directed chiefly at direction ‘s demands for HR ( non needfully employees ) to be provided and deployed. Demand instead than supply is the focal point on the activity. There is greater accent on planning, monitoring and control instead than mediation. Problem-solving is undertaken with other members of the direction on HR issues instead than straight with employees or their representatives. ‘ This definition is besides similar to the writer which focuses on Practice. Harmonizing to bookmans like Guest, it is more than merely a set of pattern – the subject has good tested theoretical accounts and theories which provide the decisions with more authorization which is why empirical grounds is provided to back up findings. Performance is another issue which requires elucidation. The writer does non truly stipulate when covering with public presentation as to which public presentation is being referred to: Organizational public presentation HR public presentation Employee public presentation Wellbeing is related to public presentation but which public presentation. If well-being is related to organisational public presentation, so wellbeing demands to be separated from the remainder of the other variables which is hard to make. Compartmentalizing Wellbeing, if possible, may take to different decisions. Wellbeing will so be examined against the organisational public presentation indexs and see how wellbeing contributes to the overall public presentation of the organisation. In these times when the traveling gets tough, employees try to set on their best show, merely to be in occupations. Performance additions as times get tough ( People Management, published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, July issues, 2009 ) . Wellbeing non needfully leads to better public presentation. But without a shadow of uncertainty, plays a important function taking to effectual public presentation. In a stable status, occupation security, committedness and work-family enterprises have been through empirical observation evidenced by the writer that wellbeing improves public presentation. It is agreed. But does the same clasp for in an unstable status where occupations are vanishing, people being made redundant, re-structuring return topographic point merely to salvage money, preparation is traveling through the Windowss due to shortage of financess, enlisting freezing in some industries – it is a affair of uncertainty. Committedness, Job Satisfaction and Work-life balance are the constitutional elements of Wellbeing. But the issue is: committedness, occupation satisfaction and work-life balance are the result of a good well-being policy instead than being the component elements of wellbeing which may be unfastened to debate. This is another point seems to be unfastened to debate. A good well-being policy will take to greater committedness, occupation satisfaction and work-life balance. By following a Cause and Effect analysis, it can be safely assumed that committedness, occupation satisfaction and work-life balance is the terminal consequence or the consequence of a good well-being policy instead than being the component elements of well-being policy. From an HR practician ‘s point of position, well-being is made up of: Effective communicating ( ACAS ) ( 2005 ) Honesty ( from both the employers and employees ) An inspiring civilization Better footings and conditions of employment Better and competitory benefits in footings of fiscal and non-financial Competitive wages scheme Schemes like proviso for looking after the aged, immature kids or taking time-off for looking after the aged, immature kids or people with disablements which may necessitate to be farther examined and defined. Disability is a long term inauspicious status of a individual ( mental or physical ) which will adversely impact a individual ‘s work related public presentation. Better periphery benefits Secured pensions Et cetera These may be the constitutional elements of wellbeing. If decently executed or implemented, it may take to enhanced committedness, occupation satisfaction and work-life balance. Critical Evaluation of Methodology The methodological analysis employed is the standard methodological analysis for analysis and the writer has taken into consideration all the elements necessary except one point – ethnicity. There seems to be no reference of ethnicity in the methodological analysis. From the cultural point of position, wellbeing possibly perceived otherwise by people coming from assorted cultural background. This is approximately diversified background. Peoples are different and may hold different sentiment on wellbeing. May be the empirical consequences would be the same, yet it is of import to understand wellbeing from different cultural backgrounds. Harmonizing to Professor Binna Kandola OBE in his latest book provinces ‘We are so witting of the demand to look just that we conceal our biass, sometimes even from ourselves ‘ take from People Management 30 July 2009, page figure 26. Hypothesis 1 Social relationships that exist between line directors and employees that are built on support and trust in direction from HRM patterns play an of import long-run function in the development of positive employee attitudes and behavior that constitute employee wellbeing at work and enhanced public presentation. Organizations that do non prosecute in these types of relationships will therefore perform worse in the long term than those that do non. The hypothesis is good founded, but in times of alteration, recession, ‘latest unemployment figures revealed that 7.1 per cent of the work force is now out of a occupation, the latest CIPD labor Market Outlook study, compiled by the professional services house KPMG ‘ People Management 21 May 2009, page7 the normative recommendations by the writer may non be compatible in today ‘s context.. Hypothesis 2 Organizations that promote and maintain committedness, occupation satisfaction and work-life balance ( wellbeing ) of their employees through the execution of high committedness, HRM patterns will profit most by superior organisational results and productiveness through set uping long-run relationships of support and trust with employees. Organizations that do non pay attending to employee wellbeing at work will hold in the long term to cover with the effects of less productive employees. The methodological analysis employed is compatible with the hypothesis. But the hypothesis seems to propose, a long term position, within which type of organisation is what needs to be established. Evidence to back up the decision is good founded. Statement of parts It needs to be acknowledged that the British Library and on line library has greatly facilitated the procedure of deriving cognition and using the cognition in the reappraisal. At the same clip, the counsel provided by the HR lector has besides enhanced the reappraisal accomplishments which has been applied and will be put to prove in all future research work. Besides, People Management published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has provided the modern-day HR issues. Discussion and Decision From a reading of the scholarly work of Nicole Renee Baptiste, it is clear from the writers ‘ statement the well-being, the cardinal subject, is viewed as ‘People ‘s overall sense of felicity. ‘ In other words, what makes employees happy at work or why should employees wish to work for one company instead than another? What information influences employee ‘s determination to do that kind of pick?
